Do you remember/The 17th of September?

Sep 30 2026 | By: Friends of the Delaware County District Library Inc.

September was a terrific month for Friends of the Delaware County District Library with memorable authors sharing their gifts and talents with us.

Despite the very rainy weather, the Delaware Book and Media Sale brought in over $2,400. We also saw over $500 in over-the-counter book sales, another great sign of continued enthusiasm for books and reading in our community. Remember that every day is a book sale day at every DCDL branch! You can purchase books from the Friends’ “Over-the-Counter” shelves at each library. If you’re unsure where to find the shelf at your local library, just ask at the front desk!

The popular Young Writers Workshops returned, featuring best selling author Margaret Peterson Haddix, guiding children in writing their own books. Haddix generously offered book signing time after the lively and creative event for workshop attendees as well as the public who brought books for signing. Stay tuned for our next Young Writers Workshop for younger children in November.

We were also pleased to offer an evening with author Isaac Fitzgerald, who joined us to discuss American Rambler: Walking the Trail of Johnny Appleseed. Monte Stevens served as our thoughtful and engaging moderator, helping guide a great conversation with plenty of insight and energy.

From the apple cider slushie and apple donut cake, to the shopping for just-picked apples brought by Legend Hills orchard, to the many products available from Stillwater Valley Orchard and Apiary, the Bicentennial Barn was a feast for the eyes, nose and taste buds.

The warmth of the evening continued with surprises for our author, starting with business cards designed and presented by Monte Stevens (made at the DCDL Maker Studio.) Representatives of the Swedenborgian church and Johnny Appleseed museum in Urbana, Ohio spoke briefly, and the woman whose family owns the last surviving tree planted by Johnny Appleseed was present as well. The final gift was an apple tree grafted from that surviving tree, presented by Stillwater Valley Orchard to Isaac. It was a thoughtful and heartwarming evening for all.

Together we enjoyed an eventful September and look forward to more Fall activities with you!
